Peter Hammill live recordings

A GUIDE TO OFFICIAL and UNOFFICIAL RECORDINGS (based on the PAWN HEARTS GUIDE)

This started life as a review of all the live Peter Hammill recordings in LP or CD format that I know of. Many of us are sufficiently avid aficionados to own recordings beyond the realm of commercial releases, and I have drawn no distinction. Often they are astoundingly good, particularly when it comes to performance. Examining the 50 odd items that comprise this discography, one can find plenty of intriguing items as well as, unfortunately, a few of poor quality. The good ones are the majority, though. I should point out by the way that I am not involved in selling or producing live CDs in any way. I'm just interested in listening to the contents.

In these reviews there are at least two I's by the way, the original Pawn Hearts and your own ManErg. Beware schizophrenia!

Since CD-Rs are now wonderfully easy to use the number of recordings available to the fanatic has spiralled! I've included several CDRs. Some are clearly intended for circulation. Others are private versions, traded between collectors rather than sold. These look set to replace boots altogether. A good place to start is at Screaming Plasma. For Completists, a more or (almost by definition) less comprehensive list can be found at Segilan's site. In a way, the advent of CDRs makes this page redundant. However, I hope it is still useful to people to have an opinion available on whats out there, and what's actually worth having.

All comments are entirely subjective.

For some recordings a ManErg seal of approval, is awarded, for more or less arbitrary reasons!

There is also a list of all the live Van Der Graaf Generator recordings I know of,
and thePAWN HEARTS list of live tapes and live segments, and a complete tourguide. Also a list of all the PH/VdGG gigs I've been to.

Information from many places, principally Pawn Hearts, Fred's Book "The Stereo Sonic Smack" and various places on the WWW and Internet. Thanks to all.

INDEX

AFTER THE SHOW   LP
Recording: 8-9
Performance:
PH solo, Kleine Komedie, Amsterdam 6/3/88
Side one: Don't Tell Me/My Room/The Play's The Thing/Still Life
Side two: After the Show/The Mousetrap/Just Good Friends/Stranger Still

The cover is a bizarre and somehow enigmatic black and white photo of cattle behind a barbed wire fence. There are apparently 500 of these (copies, not cows). The songs are all piano songs, taken out of sequence from the complete concert. Basically good sound is slightly marred by hiss, occasional drop-outs and peak level distortion.

A STRANGER A WORLDLY MAN   LP
Recording: 8-9
Performance:
PH solo, Bottom Line, NYC 8/24/81 (1st show)
Chamelion CR 0020
Side one: My Room/Mirror Images/The Mousetrap/Sign
Side two: The Cut/Time For a Change/Sitting Targets/Ophelia/The Comet, The Course, The Tail

This is a limited, numbered edition of 300 which originally came in a flimsy yellow slip-cover with black printing. The sound is good although not outstanding. Most notable is the inclusion of "The Cut," a rarely performed song not on any other vinyl boot. The cover fails to list "The Comet.".

A STRANGER STILL   LP
{short description of image}  Recording: 9-10
Performance:ex
K-Group, Theatre Caree, Amsterdam 4/8/84 K-Group, Theatre Caree, Amsterdam 4/8/84 {short description of image}
Side one: My Room/The Siren Song/The Comet, The Course, The Tail/Time For A Change
Side two: The Future Now/Stranger Still/Film Noir/Happy Hour
Side three: The Jargon King/Porton Down/Empress's Clothes/The Sphinx in the Face
Side four: Losing Faith in Words/Labour of Love/Just Good Friends/Sign

An excellent double LP set featuring most of one of the few concerts PH performed in 1984. The first two songs are solo, the next two with John Ellis only. Sound quality is superb, with just a hint of peak distortion, but otherwise what you'd expect from a board recording. The glossy black and white cover steals a photo from the "Nadir" LP. Beware: some copies contain mispressed (or filed?) LP containing something else besides the intended contents.

Three Cool Cats 026/027
Disk one: My Room/The Siren Song/The Comet, The Course, The Tail/Time For A Change , The Future Now/Stranger Still/Film Noir/Happy Hour
Disk Two: The Jargon King/Porton Down/Empress's Clothes/The Sphinx in the Face, Losing Faith in Words/Labour of Love/Just Good Friends/Sign

An excellent double CD set featuring most of one of the few concerts PH performed in 1984. The first two songs are solo, the next two with John Ellis only. Sound quality is superb, with just a hint of peak distortion, but otherwise what you'd expect from a board recording. The glossy black and white cover steals a photo from the "Nadir" LP. The sound quality is excellent, the transfer is well done with just a bit of peak distortion as on the LP. A minor complaint: At only 93 minutes over two CDs, the value could have been better, as there were more songs played at this show. However the spirit is all there. This is one of my favorite live K recordings

THE BAND OF MILLIONS OF YEARS   CD
 {short description of image} Recording: 6-10
Performance:ex

Side one: Squid 1 (VdGG studio)/ Refugees (VdGG BBC 5/25/70)/ An Epidemic of Father Christmas (VdGG BBC 4/3/70)/ Theme One (VdGG Milano 2/8/72)/ PH KROQ Los Angeles 3/14/79 interview clips mixed in Side two: Still Life (PH Paris 1/28/80)/ Flight (PH poetry reading Amsterdam 10/18/83)/ Again (PH a cappella Brussels 3/24/85)

There were apparently 200 LP copies made of this one. Now available as a Japanese CD transfer. As you can see, it's a collection of clips from various eras. Sports a nicely conceived four colour cover. PH's reading of a commercial for the "Rocky Horror Picture Show" in one of the KROQ clips is hilarious. The version of "Still Life" is not, shall we say, particularly inspired. The version of Epidemic appears to be the one used on Time Vaults!

Excellent sound and performances. Clearly a long cherished Pawn Hearts dream to sort this performance out!

PH & Graham Smith, Bookies Club Detroit, Feb 24, 1979, Cellar Door, Washington Feb13, 1979, Old Waldorf SF, Mar16 1979. All Saints, Kansas, 4 Mar 1979. {short description of image}

Side one: My Room, Time Heals, Faculty X, Again, The Birds, Modern, The Comet, If I Could,Last Frame, Nadir
Side two:If I Could, The Second Hand, Energy Vampires, Still Life, Refugees, Out of My book, Autumn, Afterwards, Condor/Faculty X , Medley: Lighthouse Keepers-Sleepwalkers

"Condor" was later recorded on Graham Smith's second solo LP, "Kalinka" (released only in Iceland!). It's a great performance, with PH on electric guitar, many consider it to be one of the best available.

FAREWELL MY LOVELY   LP
Recording: 8-9
Performance: vg
PH solo, Cinema Outremont, Montreal 6/9/78
Enaid 8764
Side one: Modern/Time For a Change/Last Frame/Easy To Slip Away/Refugees
Side two: My Room/Still Life/Medley: Lighthouse Keepers/Sleepwalkers

The cover is printed in a lovely shade of pink, and contains much misinformation with regards to tracks and sources; Hammill is misspelled "Hamill," etc. BUT, the sound is excellent for the era (Says Pawn Hearts, I can't tell on my tape), the performances are inspired and there's nearly an hour's worth of music. Definitely worth tracking down.

FRAGMENTS OUT OF TIME/IN STILL LIFE Cassette

Performance: ex
Definative live versions by PH or VdGG versions of just about everything up to 1986. {short description of image}
Everything!

Pawn Hearts contribution to the unofficial sweepstakes. The concept was originally something for private listening pleasure, but it grew into a monster which took months to put together. A labour of love, of course. Twelve cassettes, 18 hours, all with black and white printed covers with photos, artwork, advertisements, liner notes, etc, limited edition of 100 copies, a massive compilation of almost every song performed live by the band and PH solo from 1971-1986. Listening to the songs sequentially like this is a revelation! Highlights include Tapeworm, This is me dreaming, etc, etc ,etc.

HOUSE WITH NO DOOR 3 LP
  Recording: 7-10
Performance:
A three record set: see separate entries on these LPs for more source and track information.
TAKRL
Disc one "Ophelia."
Disc two "Naked Songs, Out of My Book."
Disc three is disc two of "What the Stars Did Tell Me . . ."

A three record set which came in a white box with a single photocopied black on orange insert listing song contents (but not sources) which also reproduces an M.C. Escher painting ("Bond of Union," 1956). There are apparently 100 copies only. It's also a European pressing despite the mis-appropriation of the TAKRL label. Disc one is "Ophelia." Disc two is "Naked Songs, Out of My Book." Disc three is disc two of "What the Stars Did Tell Me . . ." See separate entries on these LPs for more source and track information.

IF YOU HAVE'NT GOT IT YET DAVID, (Peter Hammill's Van Der Graff Generator) 2 CD
{short description of image}  Recording: 8-10
Performance:ex
Peter Hammill Quartet at Grenoble 1995 {short description of image}
Disc one: Easy to slip away, Siren Song, Unconscious Life, Autumn, Comfortable, Shingle Song, I will find you
Disc two: Planet Coventry, Primo on the Parapet, A Headlong Stretch, Your Tall Ship, Traintime, A Way Out

Good audience recording, but with lots of noises off. Good performances by the band (which unfortunately includes the pedestian Manny Elias). Band photos for colour cover. Recommended.

Live in Melbourne 3CD
{short description of image} Recording:
Performance:
PH: Melbourne Friday Night 20/6/97 Saturday Night 21/6/97 {short description of image}
My Room, Good Friends, Curtains, Easy to Slip Away, Vision, The Comet, the Course, the Tail, If I Could, Sign, Shingle Song, Time for a Change, Patient, Mirror Images, Stranger Still, A Way Out, Your Tall Ship, Traintime, Still Life.
Don't Tell Me Just ,Too Many of My Yesterdays ,Shell,The Unconscious Life,Time Heals,Last Frame, I Will Find You ,Something About Ysabel's Dance,Comfortable,Ophelia,Modern ,The Lie,Four Pails,Siren,The Future Now Central Hotel.

Recording is not quite as good as Sydney, and repertoire not quite so challenging, but wonderful performance again. To have played 48 different songs on 4 nights this superbly is a truly staggering achievement. Although of course to have actually written 48 songs this good is even more phenomenal.

Live in Sydney 3CDR
{short description of image}  Recording: 10
Performance:ex
PH Sydney Harbourside Brasserie,
26/27 June 1997
{short description of image}
Disc one: My Room, Just Good Friends, Easy to Slip Away, Autumn, Siren Song, The Comet..., Been Alone So Long, Central Hotel, The Birds, Comfortable, Modern,
Disc Two: Time Heals, A Better Time, A Way Out, Traintime, Still Life, Refugees, Don't Tell Me, Too Many of My Yesterdays, His Best Girl, This Side of the Looking Glass, The Lie
Amnesiac, Ophelia, Happy Hour, Out Of My Book, Afterwards, Patient, Autumn, Sleep Now, The Sleepwalkers, The Future Now, Stranger Still, Again.

Essential. Like Skeletons of Songs, this represents a comprehensive reality check on the entire repertoire. The production is a labour of love. One of the very best live performances available. Taken together with the only marginally less essential Melbourne concert this is the most sustained and brilliant performance conceivable. To be able to play 48 different songs this good, this well on 4 nights defies superlatives. If you only get one boot, this is the one.

The Margin LP, CD
{short description of image}  Recording: 8-10
Performance: see text
K Group 22-27 Oct 83
The Future Now, Porton Down, Stranger Still, Sign, The Jargon King, The Second Hand, Empress's Clothes, The Sphinx in the Face, Labour Of Love, Sitting Targets, Patient, Flight.

LP and two CD versions (at least) available. These are somehow unsatisfactory. The concert I saw on this tour (LSE 26/10) was excellent, and tapes suggest others were too. Yet somehow the production robs the whole thing of excitement. The recordings are stark, with audience interaction excised.

The Marginal Vox CD
{short description of image}  Recording: 10
Performance:ex
PH,SG, NP Vienna Szene 18/10/90 {short description of image}
The Wave
Just Good Friends
Time to Burn
The Comet, The Course, The Tail
Ophelia
Modern
Last Framme
Ysabel's Dance
Patient
Our Oyster
A Way Out
The Future Now
Traintime
Cat's Eye/Yellow Fever
Sign
Again

An outstanding set from the RoomTemperatureLive era. A super concert, showing yet again that the taste of the Japanese folks who do this stuff is phenomenal. Technically its first rate too. I never actually liked RoomTemperatureLive until I heard this (and in truth, the reason I bought it was cos it was cheap in a remainder bin, and I have completeist tendencies!), but this set converted me. Now both this and RTL get their Seals of Approval!

MODERN 2CD or 2LP
{short description of image}  Recording: 8
Performance:ex
PH & Graham Smith, Roxy, Los Angeles 3/14/79 (parts of both shows) {short description of image}
Impossible Recordworks 2-12
Side one: My Room/Condor-Faculty X/The Second Hand
Side two: Cat's Eye/Last Frame/Mirror Images
Side three: Time Heals/Energy Vampires/Modern
Side four: Medley: Lighthouse Keepers-Sleepwalkers/Refugees

"Condor" was later recorded on Graham Smith's second solo LP, "Kalinka" (released only in Iceland!). It's a great performance, with PH on electric guitar, and features "Faculty X" with severely ad libbed final lyrics. A persistent hum from the PA system is distracting in the quiet sections.

Modern Revisited CD

Performance:ex
Hammill, Jaxon, Smith (the other one).
Rainbow, London 1/10/78
{short description of image}
Time Heals
The Comet..
If I Could
The Second Hand
Last Frame
Still Life
Afterwards

I really liked this concert. The Second Hand remains in memory outstanding, Jaxon and Graham Smith ticking away to nothing. Recording reasonable, and nice to have a recording of an unusual line-up. A lot of empathy between the players, although its hard to hear the sax.

MORE SKELETONS 2CD
{short description of image}  Recording: 10
Performance:ex+
PH solo, All Souls Unitarian Church, Kansas City 23/8/81 {short description of image}
Kiss The Tit
My Room, Losing Faith, Mousetrap, Stranger Still, Sign, Time For a Change,
Ophelia, The Cut, Sitting Target, The Comet, The Future Now, Mr X/FacultyX, Flight

Like the first Skeletons, an unusual and revealing set. In this case, early accoustic versions of many "K-band" songs.

MUSIC BOX CD
{short description of image}  Recording: 8
Performance:
K-Group, Essen 1981
Aulica A123
The Future Now/Losing Faith in Words/Stranger Still/My Experience/ The Sphinx in the Face/Flight/The Spirit/Door

A decent-sounding CD release of the well-circulated K-Group video soundtrack. Increadibly irritating electronic drum.

NAKED SONGS, OUT OF MY BOOK LP
Recording:10
Performance:
PH solo, Capitol, Mannheim 3/14/85
Side one: Just Good Friends/Don't Tell Me/This Side of the Looking-Glass/The Mousetrap/The Future Now
Side two: If I Could/Been Alone So Long/Modern/My Room

Excellent, clear sound quality with track separation! (a real rarity). The cover photo is taken from "The Love Songs," and overall it's a very professional looking and sounding package, definitely one of the best unofficial releases ever. This was also pressed as a picture disc in a plastic sleeve. The front cover side of the pic disc is colour, the back is black and white.

NAMELESS AND UNTITLED LP
  Recording: 7
Performance:
PH solo, Troubadour, Los Angeles 2/4/78 (second show)
Side one: The Lie/My Room/Easy To Slip Away/Time Heals/This Side of the Looking-Glass (begin)
Side two: Looking Glass (end)/Mirror Images/House With No Door/Still Life

The cover consists of two unattached 12" x 12" white cardboard panels with black block letter printing in a plastic sleeve. The cover claims there are only 150 copies, and lists incorrect Contents. The pressing and recording are decent but bad peak distortion mars the effect throughout. In other words, a generally undistinguished package. PH forgets the words to "House" and ad libs: "I forget all my lines, though I know them so well!"

ON LOCATION LP

Side one: My Room/Just Good Friends/Ophelia/Modern
Side two: Don't Tell Me/Labour of Love/Invisible Ink/Time To Burn/Auto/The Play's The Thing

Black and white printed cover from the innersleeve of Kaleidoscope's "When Scopes Collide" (US group). Back cover reproduces article from UK magazine "Coup" about where members of VdGG are now. Graz side is soundboard. Foreign Town session is now available on The Peel Sessions

OPHELIA 2 CD
{short description of image}  Recording: 8
Performance:ex
K-group, Kant Kino, Berlin 9/27/81
Metropol
Side one: The Future Now/Losing Faith in Words/Stranger Still/Sign
Side two: My Experience/Modern/The Second Hand/Sitting Targets

The beautiful colour cover art qualifies this as one of the nicest packages around, but the sound quality of the K-group performances is not outstanding, and the performances are ordinary. Some copies were pressed on multi-coloured vinyl in addition to the basic black. Side one of this LP also appears (in a bizarre case of mispressing) as side one of the Bauhaus double LP boot "The Final Gig," issued by the same company. Does anyone else have a copy of this?

Performance:ex
PH Berlin 1992
K7017
The Future Now, I Will Find You, Usher's Suite, Patient, Curtains, My Room, Ysabel's Dance, Traintime, Given Time, A way Out, Modern

Mixture of live songs and interviews. Somehow the thread is lost. But of course the only official video, and an interesting document. Rarites are Given Time and Usher.

(Live compilation, 1974-88) A collection of songs recorded for John Peel's radio show on BBC Radio . Participation of Graham Smith on 2) {short description of image}

2)Betrayed, Afterwards, Autumn,
3)Mr. X, (gets tense), Faculty X, Mediaevil, Time For A Change,
4) The Play's the Thing, Auto, Invisible ink, Time to burn.

Hammill always seems to come up with great interpretations on the radio. Somehow the medium suits him, and what we get is spontaneous, but controlled. A selection of excellent sets, the impassioned performances often (in the earlier songs) eclipse the album versions.

Disc two: If I Could, Afterwards, Mediaevil, Losing Faith in Words, Sign, Don't Tell Me, Stranger Still, Autumn, My Experience, Paradox Drive, Modern, Patient, Film Noir, Happy Hour.

A simply tremendous anthology. For some reason radio seems to bring the best out of Hammill, and this is contains some great performances. Somehow the medium seems to suit him, and what we get is spontaneous, but controlled. Particularly handy is to get most of the stuff on Searching For Diamonds, which is now unnecessary.

Disc two:

Live highlights of the trio tour. I'm rather ambiguous about this lineup, but every now and then they come up with a truly new slant on a song, which makes it worthwhile.

Good sound, track separation and some great performances. A nice package, but all these songs and more are now available on the excellent Radio Archives I except the last track, which is on the officialThe Peel Sessions

AGM-1003
My Experience/Paradox Drive/Sign/If I Could/Modern/Film Noir/The Great Experiment/Sitting Targets/Happy Hour/Central Hotel/Again/The Spirit/The Second Hand

The cover and booklet photos are from inside of "The Margin," and the editing follows that of the official live release, with only a few bits of applause left in. Many of the songs start and stop without any intro or applause at all. "The Second Hand" appears to be taken from a vinyl copy of "The Margin" (it's the only track which hasn't appeared on any of the three official CD versions). A good selection of songs and great value at over 74 minutes on one CD. Beats The Margin hands down!

Side three: Time For a Change/Been Alone So Long/Modern/The Comet, The Course, The Tail
Side four: Medley: Lighthouse Keepers-Sleepwalkers/Man-Erg

By far the rarest, most sought-after of all PH/VdGG boots. The 2LP box set has a glued on cover, includes a 17" x 23" poster (hand on guitar in three different drawings progressing from flesh to skeleton) and two inserts (a photo of the church wall, solarized, and one of the road into Kansas) plus a sheet detailing contents and credits. A limited, numbered edition of 100, and a simply wonderful package.

The complete concert in the original running order, with six tracks not on the LP. Slight background hiss but the recording has remarkable clarity and presence. The cover is the same as the LP, and the package includes reproductions of both photo inserts and a full-size poster. Hope at last for the many who have searched in vain for the LP for years! Side Three: Ekome, Kiss of Life, Biko
Side Four: Dog1, Dog2, Dog3
Side Five: The Ritual Mask, Dog1, Dog2, Dog3, Indian Melody,
Side Six: Across The River

Hammill allegedly does backing vocals on the first set, but its the second half that's interesting. A "miniset" with a band apparently consisting of Gabriel, Hammill, Shankar, Rhodes, Fast, Copeland playing weird stuff!

Hammill does Ritual Mask (rather histrionically, of course), and Dog (or maybe Dock) 123 is a stupendous Gabriel song without words.

Possibly my favorite solo live Hammill concert recording. This is semi-official, I bought mine at Virgin Megastore in Paris - they own the label. Hammill sadly didn't know and disapproved. The cover is a travesty, but the performance is utterly compelling, the songs fit together perfectly, a reflection on love, death and acting.

Side three: Mirror Images/The Future Now/Time For a Change/Sign
Side four: Last Frame/Flight (cut)
I have this as a tape, with the cover shown. pawn Hearts says the pink tinted LP cover features a common photo of PH. "Flight" cuts off very close to the end, which is really irritating. Excellent sound and performances, though. Perhaps this would have made a better single CD (It Did! see A Better Time for a Change), with one version each of the repeated songs. There are many (deliberate?) misspellings of song titles and Hammill is again "Hamill."
TOO MANY OF MY YESTERDAYS 2LP
Recording: 8-9
Performance:ex
PH solo, Zeche, Bochum 5/16/88
Side One: Too Many Of My Yesterdays/Other Old Cliches/Just Good Friends/Time To Burn/This Side of the Looking-Glass
Side two: The Comet, The Course, The Tail/Vision/Sign (begin)
Side three: Ophelia-Sign (end)/Patient/Four Pails/Shell
Side four: Stranger Still/After the Show/Refugees

Issued at the same tim e, and with the same tacky packaging as "Pilgrims." This one has a white envelope for the discs and a black on grey photocopied insert, and is a numbered edition of 500 copies. The sound is decent except for the distortion in loud passages, and shoddy editing spoils the "Sign/Ophelia" medley which straddles sides two and three.

Disc Two: Time For A Change , Patient , Stranger Still , Our Oyster , Shell , A Way Out , Traintime , The Future Now , Afterwards , Darkness , Central Hotel

Best Official live recording ever. Carefully assembled and edited solo performances all from the same tour. Each performance is at once "Typical" and extreme. Surprise encores. Fascinating sleeve notes by PH explaining how he builds a set. But at the end of the day, you might feel that Tides, a single, perfect concert from the same era, is even better.

Disc Two
Hamburg Station , Seven Wonders , Adagio for Strings, Red Shift, Lemmings , Outroduction , Traintime

Interesting performances of lots of new stuff, great spirit, excellent Jackson solo. Would be compelling even if it weren't for the VdGG stuff. With it, its magnificent.
URBABEL LP

"Loops and Reels" cassette, Sofa Sound, 1983
Critical Mass/An Endless Breath/In Slow Time (excerpt) Side two: My Pulse/The Bells! The Bells! (excerpt)

Utterly futile, although I suppose it might once have been an act of heroic devotion. This is actually a pirate rather than a bootleg, the material concerned having been released privately on cassette by PH in 1983, and now officially available as the Loops and Reels CD, which renders it irrelevant. It came in a plain brown cardboard sleeve sealed with a glued on piece of blue paper. Some copies had a forgery of PH's signature on the paper, while others had his initials. The release comes from either Mexico or somewhere in South America. There is absolutely no information on the record, save for the title "Urbabel" on the LP labels, along with a graphic design. Interesting, and pretty scarce (which must be a good thing).

Useless cover. First session especially is interesting, and I suppose is actually the earliest live solo available, but neither session is exactly essential.

Side three: Just Good Friends (instrumental, studio B-side version)/Tintagel (Playaway TV with DJ, 1980)/Vision/Too Many Of My Yesterdays
Side four: Just Good Friends/Four Pails/Refugees

The title comes from a Tim Buckley song, and the cover is a nice full colour job with three photos from Stuttgart 11/31/86. Contents and credits are clear and complete. The sound could be better in places: The Berlin recordings are basically good but with the ubiqu
